Ex-Michigan Basketball Guard Signs Pro Deal in England

Former Michigan Wolverines basketball standout, Xavier Simpson, has officially signed a professional contract with the Leicester Riders in England’s top basketball league, the British Basketball League (BBL). The announcement was made this morning by both Simpsonโ€™s representatives and the Leicester Riders organization.

Simpson, who played a pivotal role in Michigan’s backcourt from 2016 to 2020, brings a wealth of experience and skill to the Riders. Known for his exceptional court vision, defensive tenacity, and leadership on the floor, Simpson’s addition is expected to bolster the team’s performance significantly. During his college career, Simpson earned All-Big Ten honors and was a key contributor to Michigan’s deep runs in the NCAA tournament.

After going undrafted in the 2020 NBA Draft, Simpson embarked on a professional journey that included stints in various international leagues. His latest move to the Leicester Riders marks a new chapter in his career. The Riders, who finished as one of the top teams in the BBL last season, are excited about Simpson’s potential impact on their lineup.

Leicester Ridersโ€™ head coach, Rob Paternostro, expressed his enthusiasm about the signing, stating, “Xavier brings a high level of skill and experience that we believe will make a significant difference. His leadership qualities and playmaking ability are exactly what we were looking for.”

Simpson himself expressed his eagerness to join the Riders and compete in the BBL. “Iโ€™m thrilled to join the Leicester Riders and start this new chapter of my career. I look forward to contributing to the teamโ€™s success and connecting with the fans here in England.”

As the BBL season approaches, all eyes will be on Simpson as he takes on this new challenge, aiming to make his mark in British basketball.
